Burlington, VT – Scorching heat will grip Vermont today, July 6, with heat index values pushing up to 98°F in Burlington and across the Champlain Valley.

A Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to 8 p.m. Sunday, according to the National Weather Service in Burlington. Residents from Swanton to Rutland — especially those along I-89 and Route 7 — should avoid strenuous activity and stay indoors if possible. Cities including Middlebury, South Hero, and Vergennes are under the advisory.

The advisory spans Eastern Clinton and Essex Counties in New York, and Western Addison, Chittenden, Franklin, Rutland, and Grand Isle Counties in Vermont. Heat stroke and exhaustion are real risks in this weather. NWS officials urge people to wear loose-fitting clothing, hydrate regularly, and schedule outdoor work for early morning or evening hours.

Don’t leave pets or children in vehicles — car interiors can reach fatal temperatures in minutes. OSHA also recommends frequent shaded breaks for workers outdoors.

Showers may bring slight relief Sunday night with a 30% chance of rain and a low near 71°F. However, the week ahead remains warm and unsettled.
