Montpelier, VT – Vermont residents are bracing for the season’s first significant snowfall as a winter storm warning goes into effect Thursday morning.
Heavy snow is expected to begin around dawn, continuing through Friday morning. According to the National Weather Service, totals will range between 4 and 9 inches, with higher amounts likely in the southern Green Mountains. The heaviest snowfall is predicted between noon and 9 p.m. Thursday.
Officials warn of slick and hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Heavy, wet snow may also cause scattered power outages. Residents planning to travel for the holiday weekend are urged to check road conditions by calling 511 and to allow extra travel time.
Counties under the warning include Orange, Eastern Rutland, and Windsor. This marks the first measurable snowfall of the season for many areas, prompting preparations for winter road maintenance and safety precautions.
Drivers should carry emergency kits, reduce speeds, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.
