Burlington, Vermont – Gardeners in the Champlain Valley should act fast—temperatures could dip to 30°F early Thursday, putting sensitive plants at risk as a Frost Advisory takes hold overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Burlington, the advisory is in effect from 12 a.m. to 7 a.m. Thursday, covering northern and central portions of the Champlain Valley, including Burlington, Middlebury, and St. Albans. Frost formation is likely, and any uncovered plants may suffer damage or die from the cold exposure.
The alert comes as many residents have already started early spring planting. Experts urge people to cover vulnerable vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and avoid watering tonight, which can worsen frost damage.
While roads and travel aren’t expected to be affected, the sudden temperature drop could surprise residents used to milder April evenings. This is one of the latest frost advisories issued in recent years, marking a chillier-than-average end to the month.
The advisory remains active until 7 a.m. Thursday, and additional cold-weather warnings could be issued if temperatures fall further. Stay tuned to weather.gov/btv or local media for updates overnight.
