Salt Lake City, UT – A powerful winter storm will hit northern Utah Wednesday night, bringing valley rain and heavy snow to mountain areas.
The National Weather Service warns that snowfall totals could reach up to 12 inches in higher elevations, particularly in the Upper Cottonwoods, including popular routes like Big Cottonwood Canyon. The heaviest snowfall is expected overnight into Thursday morning, making travel hazardous on key roadways, including I-80 and SR-190. Drivers are urged to prepare for slick conditions, carry chains, and allow extra time for commutes.
Rain will likely mix with snow in lower valleys overnight, with minor accumulations possible on grassy surfaces. However, conditions are expected to improve by Thursday afternoon as precipitation tapers off and temperatures rise.
Looking ahead, Friday will bring partly sunny skies and a high near 52°F, offering a brief break from the stormy weather. By Saturday evening, another system may move into the region, with a slight chance of rain and snow lingering through Sunday.
Residents should stay updated on changing weather conditions and exercise caution while traveling during the storm.
