Salt Lake City, Utah – Triple-digit heat is gripping northern Utah today, with temperatures nearing 99°F by mid-afternoon across the Salt Lake Valley — just as residents begin planning for the July 4th weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Salt Lake City, a Heat Advisory is in effect from noon to midnight today for Salt Lake, Tooele, and Utah Valleys. Afternoon highs could reach 100°F in some neighborhoods, while overnight lows remain uncomfortably warm near 70°F.

Highways like I-15 and U.S. Route 89 could see heat-induced pavement issues and increased breakdowns. Residents are urged to avoid non-essential outdoor work and to hydrate frequently. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent shaded rest breaks if working outdoors.

Communities including Provo, West Jordan, Grantsville, and Sandy should limit outdoor activity between noon and 6 p.m. when heat index values peak. Symptoms of heat exhaustion can include nausea, dizziness, and confusion. If signs of heat stroke occur, call 911 immediately.

Cooler weather arrives briefly by Thursday night, with a weak chance of showers. But heat returns for Independence Day, with highs near 89°F and sunny skies.
