Salt Lake City, UT – A powerful winter storm continues to bring heavy snowfall to Utah’s mountain regions, with winter storm warnings in effect until Friday evening. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that travel could be hazardous due to accumulating snow and gusty winds.

According to the NWS, the Wasatch Mountains south of Interstate 80, including Brighton and Alta, could see between 8 and 16 inches of additional snow, with some areas in the Upper Cottonwoods potentially receiving up to 2 feet. The warning remains in place until 6 p.m. MDT Friday, as northwest flow and lake effect snow could prolong snowfall in these areas.

Further south, the Wasatch Plateau, Book Cliffs, Central Mountains, Western Uinta Mountains, and Southern Mountains are also experiencing heavy snowfall. These regions could see between 7 and 14 inches, with locally higher amounts up to 20 inches in favored locations such as Brian Head. This warning is set to expire at 9 a.m. MDT Friday.

The storm is expected to make travel treacherous across mountain passes, with reduced visibility and snow-covered roads. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) advises travelers to carry emergency supplies, including food, water, and a flashlight, in case of delays or road closures.

For up-to-date road conditions, residents and travelers can visit UDOT Traffic. Graphical forecasts and snowfall predictions are available at NWS Salt Lake City.
