Salt Lake City, Utah – A 3.1 magnitude earthquake struck 9 kilometers north-northeast of Scipio early Saturday morning, briefly shaking parts of central Utah around 6:35 a.m. MDT.

According to the University of Utah Seismograph Stations, the tremor occurred at a shallow depth of approximately 3.1 kilometers, making it more likely to be felt near the epicenter along I-15 between Scipio and Nephi. No damage or injuries were immediately reported.

Scipio-area residents may have noticed brief ground motion or heard a low rumble, especially in homes near the foothills or older structures. Light quakes of this size rarely cause significant damage but can startle residents and sometimes trigger rockfalls in canyon areas. Nearby towns such as Fillmore, Holden, and Levan could also have felt the vibration.

While Friday’s event was minor, Utah is part of the Intermountain Seismic Belt, a region with a long history of moderate quakes. Officials recommend that residents review emergency kits, secure heavy furniture, and participate in statewide earthquake preparedness efforts like the Great Utah ShakeOut.

No aftershocks have been reported, but seismic monitoring continues through the University of Utah and USGS.
