Salt Lake City, UT – A backcountry avalanche warning is in effect for northern Utah and southeast Idaho as heavy snow and strong winds increase the risk of natural and human-triggered avalanches.

According to the Forest Service Utah Avalanche Center, the warning covers the northern Wasatch Range and the Bear River Range, remaining in effect until 6 a.m. MST Sunday. Officials warn that drifting snow and unstable layers at all elevations will lead to high avalanche danger by Saturday afternoon or night.

Outdoor enthusiasts are urged to avoid all avalanche terrain, particularly slopes steeper than 30 degrees. Avalanche runouts areas where debris can travel far downhill should also be avoided. The risk is widespread and could extend beyond the official warning zones.

For those planning backcountry travel, experts recommend checking www.utahavalanchecenter.org or www.avalanche.org for the latest conditions. Authorities emphasize that the safest course of action is to steer clear of avalanche-prone areas until conditions improve.
