Rensselaer, NY – Residents in Upstate New York woke to light snow Monday morning, with slippery roads causing dangerous driving conditions across Rensselaer County. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that freezing rain could persist through mid-morning, raising risks for both drivers and pedestrians.

According to the NWS, snow accumulation overnight ranged between one to two inches. As temperatures rise into the low 40s today, precipitation will shift to rain by early afternoon. Motorists traveling on roadways like I-90 and local streets should remain alert for icy patches, especially during the morning commute.

Monday night will see periods of steady rain, continuing through early Tuesday. Winds will pick up slightly, reaching gusts of up to 25 mph, with temperatures rising to the high 40s overnight. Any standing moisture could refreeze in sheltered, colder areas by Tuesday morning, causing lingering slick spots.

By Tuesday, skies will begin to clear slightly, with temperatures climbing to 52°F. Forecasters predict a brief reprieve from precipitation midweek, as Wednesday looks drier and mostly cloudy. Another round of rain showers is possible Wednesday night, before temperatures dip back into the low 30s.

Heading into Thursday, colder air returns with highs in the upper 30s and partly sunny skies. The weather will trend drier through the weekend, though light snow showers may develop Friday night into Saturday morning. Highs are expected to remain in the upper 30s to low 40s, with nighttime lows dropping into the teens.

Travelers are encouraged to check road conditions and allow extra time for commutes today and through the week. The National Weather Service urges everyone to exercise caution, dress appropriately, and monitor changing weather updates for safety.
