Utica, NY – Residents across Madison, Onondaga, and Oneida counties are preparing for a significant lake-effect snow event that could bring up to 3 feet of snow by Sunday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued a Lake Effect Snow Warning, in effect until 4 p.m. Sunday, cautioning travelers and residents about hazardous conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow is expected to intensify in localized bands, accompanied by wind gusts of up to 40 mph. These conditions could make travel nearly impossible in some areas, especially during peak commute hours Friday morning and evening.

The affected areas include Syracuse, Rome, Utica, and Hamilton. Snowfall will vary significantly, with heavy snow falling in narrow bands while nearby areas may see little accumulation. Visibility is expected to drop quickly in the heaviest bands of snow.

Officials urge residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to prepare emergency kits for vehicles, including flashlights, food, and water. For the latest road conditions, travelers are advised to call 511.

Drivers should remain alert to changing conditions and exercise caution throughout the weekend as the storm progresses.
