Marquette, MI – A powerful wintry mix is set to impact travel and public safety across Upper Michigan starting early Friday morning, with freezing rain, ice accumulation, and snow expected to cause dangerous conditions into Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, a Winter Storm Watch will take effect at 8 a.m. Friday and last through Saturday morning. Mixed precipitation will bring ice accumulations over a quarter of an inch and up to an inch of snow, with slick roads, tree damage, and power outages all possible. U.S. Highway 41 travelers should prepare for near-impossible driving conditions during the Friday evening commute.

Rain, sleet, and snow will begin late Friday morning, with freezing rain and ice likely through Friday night. Winds could gust up to 25 mph, increasing the risk of falling tree limbs and power lines.

Temperatures Friday will reach 34°F before dropping to 30°F at night. Saturday brings continued snow showers with a high near 32°F and gusty winds. Roads may remain icy into Saturday evening.

Residents should monitor local forecasts and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. Emergency kits and charging mobile devices are recommended ahead of the storm.

Looking ahead, Sunday will see lingering snow showers with a high of 32°F. Monday through Wednesday appears drier, with partly cloudy skies and highs in the mid-to-upper 30s.
