Marquette, MI – Warmer-than-normal temperatures are sweeping across Upper Michigan, accelerating snowmelt and increasing ice hazards on lakes and rivers. Residents should prepare for changing conditions, as melting snow could lead to localized flooding and dangerous ice breakups.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS), temperatures will rise into the 40s and 50s through the weekend, with overnight lows staying above freezing in some areas. This rapid thaw will cause snowpack to diminish, making ice on waterways increasingly unstable. Officials warn that conditions could worsen into next week, with ice-covered lakes and rivers becoming unsafe for any activity.

Drivers should also be cautious, especially on highways like U.S. 41 and M-28, where melting snow may lead to pooling water and slippery roads. Authorities urge motorists to watch for black ice in the mornings and standing water in low-lying areas.

Looking ahead, Marquette will see partly sunny skies Thursday, with highs near 48°F. Friday and Saturday will be even warmer, reaching the low 50s, with rain showers possible by the weekend.

Residents are advised to monitor forecasts and avoid venturing onto ice-covered lakes. If traveling, allow extra time and stay aware of road conditions.
