Billings, MT – The 2024–25 snow season delivered dramatic contrasts across the U.S., with the snowiest spots buried in triple-digit totals — and unlikely southern cities like New Orleans recording historic anomalies.

According to the National Weather Service’s seasonal gridded snowfall analysis released May 28, Marquette, Michigan led the nation with 181.4 inches, only slightly below its norm of 196.8. Buffalo, New York, meanwhile, recorded 77.3 inches — about 18 inches shy of average — as warmer conditions limited totals across parts of the Northeast.

In the West, Billings, Montana saw 64.2 inches, roughly 7 inches above normal, with about half falling in February. Denver came in well below average at 36.1 inches, continuing a trend of drier winters across the central Rockies.

But the most surprising number came from New Orleans, Louisiana, where 8.0 inches of snow fell — a staggering 800% above its typical seasonal total of 0.0 inches. Light snow also blanketed parts of Tennessee, with Chattanooga reporting 4.1 inches, slightly above its average.

Heavy snow remained concentrated over the Rockies and Great Lakes, where elevation and lake-effect patterns continued to dominate seasonal accumulation.

Snow season has officially ended, but with lingering soil moisture and warming trends, eyes now turn toward an active hurricane season taking shape.
