Washington, D.C. — A dangerous Arctic blast is sweeping across much of the United States, bringing life-threatening wind chills and record low temperatures through Thursday, according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The cold wave spans from the Northern Plains to the Gulf Coast, affecting millions.
According to the NWS, wind chills as low as 30 to 55 degrees below zero are expected in the Rockies, Northern Plains, and Upper Midwest through Tuesday. Subzero wind chills will also extend to the south-central Plains, Ohio Valley, and the Eastern Seaboard through Wednesday. Several areas, including cities like Chicago, Minneapolis, and Kansas City, are under warnings due to the risk of frostbite and hypothermia.
Hazardous cold weather is expected to linger along the Gulf Coast and Southeastern states, including Dallas and New Orleans, through much of the week. Forecasters warn of severe risks to exposed skin and unprotected plumbing in these regions.
The NWS advises residents to protect pets, livestock, and plumbing and avoid prolonged outdoor exposure. Those traveling should carry a cold-weather survival kit and ensure vehicles have adequate fuel to stay warm if stranded.
This Arctic front could result in several record-breaking lows, with predicted temperatures dropping below zero in many regions, including Washington, D.C., and Nashville by midweek. The bitter cold underscores the importance of preparedness.
