Tallahassee, FL – Tropical Storm Rafael is expected to strengthen into a Category 2 hurricane by Tuesday night, potentially threatening the Gulf Coast by late week.
According to the U.S. National Weather Service, Rafael formed in the central Caribbean Sea and is rapidly intensifying as it moves northwest. Forecasts indicate that Rafael could become a Category 2 hurricane by tomorrow night, bringing heavy rains and high winds across its path. Areas along the Gulf Coast, particularly Florida’s east-central region, are advised to prepare for severe weather impacts by Wednesday or Thursday.
The storm is projected to bring heavy rainfall, hazardous marine conditions, and dangerous surf to Western Cuba before possibly impacting the Gulf Coast by Friday. The National Weather Service’s Melbourne office noted that residents should monitor the storm’s progress and make preparations now, as conditions could deteriorate quickly once Rafael strengthens.
Officials are urging residents in the storm’s projected path to secure loose items, prepare for potential flooding, and stay informed through regular updates. Forecasters warn that even areas outside the main impact zone may experience severe weather effects as Rafael intensifies.
