Houston, TX – As Tropical Storm Beryl approaches the Texas coastline, residents are preparing for significant storm surges, tornado threats, and dangerous rip currents. Authorities have issued storm surge warnings and watches, with potential flooding expected along local beaches.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston office, the storm surge could inundate beaches with 4 to 6 feet of water in some areas. Affected regions include Galveston Bay, Matagorda Bay, and Corpus Christi Bay. The NWS has also warned of 2 to 4 feet of inundation in other parts of the coast.
The NWS also indicated that the risk of tornadoes is high, with brief tornadoes possible through Monday. The most affected areas include Galveston, Freeport, and surrounding regions. The severe weather outlook places these areas under a moderate risk for tornado activity.
In addition to storm surges and tornadoes, the NWS warns of high rip current risks along Gulf-facing beaches, making swimming conditions hazardous. The warning is in effect through early next week, urging beachgoers to avoid the water and respect barricades set up to protect flood-prone properties.
