Wilmington, N.C. – Tropical Depression Three is expected to strengthen into a tropical storm by Saturday evening, bringing heavy rain, high surf, and a chance of isolated tornadoes across eastern North and South Carolina through Monday.
According to the National Weather Service, life-threatening rip currents and treacherous marine conditions are already developing along coastal areas from Myrtle Beach to Cape Hatteras. Rainfall totals of 1 to 2 inches are expected across the Sandhills and Coastal Plain, with localized amounts nearing 4 inches in poor-drainage zones. Flash flooding may occur in cities such as Jacksonville, New Bern, and Wilmington.
A slight tornado risk exists Saturday night into early Sunday, especially in southeast NC. Tornado impacts are projected to be isolated but possible during embedded storm cells. Moderate storm surge could impact low-lying coastal areas Sunday morning as the center of the storm nears the SC coast.
Beaches including Atlantic Beach, N. Topsail, and Emerald Isle are under a High Rip Current Risk, and beachgoers are urged to stay out of the water. Inland travel may be affected by ponding on roads, especially in Greenville and Kenansville.
Hazardous conditions will persist through late Sunday night, with additional advisories possible as the system tracks inland.
