Des Moines, IA – Travelers across Iowa can expect challenging weather today and into Thanksgiving as rain and light snow move through the region. Rain is likely this morning, particularly across northern Missouri, Kansas, and parts of Iowa. Light snow may develop later in the day across portions of Iowa, Minnesota, and South Dakota, making holiday road conditions potentially hazardous.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will persist throughout today, with high temperatures reaching 42°F in Des Moines. Drivers on I-35 and other major routes should prepare for slick roads and reduced visibility during the morning commute. As the evening approaches, temperatures will drop to around 24°F, potentially creating icy patches overnight.

Thanksgiving Day is forecast to be mostly sunny but much cooler, with highs near 33°F and brisk winds out of the northwest. Travelers should bundle up and watch for icy spots, especially on less-traveled roads. The weather improves Friday, with clear skies and highs around 27°F, but another light snow system may brush through on Saturday morning.

Plan ahead if you’re traveling today or tomorrow. Pack an emergency kit with blankets, water, and a phone charger, and allow extra time for delays. Thanksgiving dinner plans should be unaffected for most areas as dry conditions settle in late Thursday into Friday.

Stay tuned for updates as the system develops, and check the latest road conditions before heading out.
