Albany, NY – A strong lake effect snow system is impacting parts of upstate New York, with warnings in effect through Monday. The National Weather Service (NWS) expanded Lake Effect Snow Warnings to include all of Herkimer County, while Hamilton County remains under a Winter Weather Advisory until 4 p.m. Sunday. Residents along Routes 28 and 12 are urged to prepare for hazardous driving conditions and low visibility.
According to the NWS, snowfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour in some areas, particularly near Old Forge and Syracuse. The heaviest accumulations—up to 9 inches—are expected along the western Adirondacks. Blowing and drifting snow may further complicate travel, especially on untreated roads.
The extended forecast for Albany predicts a mix of cloudy skies and frigid temperatures this week. Monday will see a high near 22°F, with northwest winds of 10-15 mph creating wind chills as low as 10°F. The coldest days will arrive midweek, with temperatures dropping to 11°F Wednesday night.
Travelers should monitor the latest weather updates and use caution on interstates and rural routes. Residents are advised to clear snow and ice from vehicles and walkways to prevent accidents. Stay updated by visiting weather.gov for the latest advisories.
