Overland Park, Kansas – A tornado watch is now in effect for parts of eastern Kansas, including Johnson, Miami, and Linn counties, as atmospheric conditions become favorable for severe storms through 8 p.m. Tuesday. Residents are urged to prepare for rapidly changing weather and the possibility of tornadoes, damaging winds, and hail.

According to the National Weather Service and the Storm Prediction Center, Tornado Watch 359 was issued at 1:35 p.m. CDT as strong thunderstorms begin forming across the region. The watch covers suburban Kansas City communities, including Overland Park, Olathe, and Paola, where instability and wind shear may support rotating storms.

Drivers along I-35 and U.S. Route 69 should remain alert, as heavy downpours and low visibility could create hazardous conditions during the evening commute. Outdoor events and activities should be postponed, and residents are advised to identify a safe shelter location now—preferably a basement or interior room on the lowest floor.

This is the first tornado watch issued for the Kansas City metro area this June. Warnings may follow quickly if storms intensify. Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or local media for updates through Tuesday night.
