Columbia, SC – Central and Southern South Carolina are under a tornado watch as the outer bands of Hurricane Helene bring severe weather to the region. The watch, issued Thursday morning, will remain in effect until 9 p.m. EDT, as dangerous conditions are expected to develop throughout the day.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), several tornadoes are likely to form as the strong low-level winds associated with Hurricane Helene increase. The watch area includes regions up to 70 miles east and west of a line stretching from Savannah, Georgia to Columbia, South Carolina.
Residents in the affected areas are advised to remain alert and be prepared to take shelter if warnings are issued. The NWS recommends staying informed through local broadcasts and preparing emergency kits in case of sudden tornado formation.
Air travel may also experience significant disruptions due to strong winds and turbulence. Further updates and warnings will be provided as the storm progresses.
