Lake City, FL – A heightened tornado threat is in effect for communities along Florida’s I-75 corridor today as Hurricane Helene makes landfall. The National Weather Service has placed the eastern Big Bend and areas near I-75 at significant risk for tornadoes throughout Thursday and into the evening.

The outer bands of Helene are expected to generate thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes, with the most vulnerable areas including Lake City and Gainesville. Alongside the tornado risk, heavy rains and winds exceeding 70 mph will likely cause flash flooding and downed power lines, creating hazardous travel conditions on I-75 and nearby roads.

Officials urge residents to stay indoors and have a safe place prepared in case of tornado warnings. Mobile home residents are advised to relocate to sturdier shelters immediately. According to weather experts, travel should be avoided along I-75 until the storm passes, as conditions may worsen quickly, leaving roads impassable. Keep up with local warnings and be prepared to take cover if necessary.
