Mason City, IL – A tornado warning has been issued for southeastern Mason County as severe storms capable of producing tornadoes and strong winds move through central Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Lincoln, the warning remains in effect until 10:30 PM CDT. At 9:53 PM, radar detected rotation in a severe thunderstorm near Easton, about nine miles north of Petersburg. The storm is moving northeast at 50 mph.
The storm poses a serious threat, with potential tornadoes and quarter-sized hail. The National Weather Service warns that flying debris could be dangerous, and mobile homes, roofs, windows, and vehicles may sustain significant damage. Tree damage is also likely.
Residents in the path of the storm, including Mason City, should take cover immediately in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Those outdoors, in vehicles, or in mobile homes should seek substantial shelter.
