Lincoln, NE – A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for parts of eastern Colorado, western Kansas, and southwest Nebraska until 10 PM CDT. Thunderstorms moving across the region could produce severe winds up to 70 mph and hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS) Storm Prediction Center, the storms began developing in eastern Colorado this afternoon and are expected to spread eastward into Kansas and Nebraska this evening. The primary threats from these storms are damaging wind gusts and large hail, posing risks to both property and personal safety.
Residents in the affected areas are urged to stay indoors and avoid travel if possible during the storm. It is also advisable to secure outdoor objects that could become projectiles in high winds. People should remain alert for threatening weather conditions and monitor local news for updates and potential warnings.
The watch area extends approximately 80 miles east and west of a line from 40 miles west-northwest of McCook, NE, to 20 miles south of Springfield, CO. The NWS emphasizes that while a severe thunderstorm watch means conditions are favorable for severe thunderstorms, it does not guarantee that they will occur. However, preparedness and vigilance are crucial during this period.
