Chicago, IL – A powerful low-pressure system tracking from the Colorado Rockies into the Midwest and Northeast is set to deliver widespread snow, rain, and freezing temperatures through Thanksgiving, creating dangerous conditions for holiday travelers.
The National Weather Service reports the system will intensify as it moves eastward, bringing 4 to 8 inches of snow to portions of the Upper Great Lakes, including northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, by Thursday night. Rain will dominate southern areas, with scattered thunderstorms likely this afternoon across the Mississippi, Ohio, and Tennessee Valleys before shifting toward the East Coast overnight.
Timing and Regional Impacts
Snow showers will begin in the Midwest tonight, especially in northern Michigan, where travel on highways like US-2 and I-75 may become treacherous. By Thanksgiving morning, the storm will reach the interior Northeast, with snow accumulating in New York, Pennsylvania, and New England. Higher elevations in the Northern Appalachians could see 4 to 8 inches of snow by Friday morning, while lower elevations may experience a mix of rain and snow.
Thunderstorms in the Mississippi and Ohio Valleys may produce brief heavy downpours and localized flooding but are not expected to be severe. Rainfall could also slow travel along I-65, I-70, and I-40, where wet conditions are likely.
Cold Air to Follow the Storm
Once the system passes, an arctic air mass will plunge temperatures across the Midwest and Northeast. Thanksgiving highs will struggle to reach the 20s and 30s in many areas, with wind chills making it feel even colder.
Travelers are advised to plan for delays, monitor conditions, and pack emergency supplies if driving through affected areas. Snow-covered roads and icy patches will remain a concern through Friday.
Stay tuned for updates as conditions develop and prepare for a challenging Thanksgiving holiday.
