Chicago, IL – A powerful Arctic blast is expected to bring the coldest air of the season by Thanksgiving. The frigid air will spread across the Northern Plains, Midwest, and parts of the South through the holiday weekend, according to the National Weather Service (NWS).
NWS predicts dangerously low wind chills across much of the Midwest and northern Plains, with temperatures dropping 15°F below normal. Wind chills could reach life-threatening levels, increasing the risk of frostbite and hypothermia for anyone outside for extended periods.
Heavy lake-effect snow is also expected to impact regions around the Great Lakes from Friday through Monday. Forecasters warn of hazardous travel conditions, especially along major routes in western New York and northern Ohio. Snowfall could exceed nine inches in some areas, creating whiteout conditions.
The NWS advises travelers to stay updated on changing weather conditions and plan for delays. Experts recommend wearing layered clothing, limiting outdoor exposure, and keeping emergency supplies in vehicles.
Temperatures are likely to rival mid-February lows, making this Arctic blast unusual for late November.
