Albuquerque, NM — Residents in northern New Mexico should prepare for heavy winds and snow starting Tuesday, as a storm system moves across the region. Snowfall is expected at elevations above 8,500 feet, with wind gusts reaching up to 50 mph east of the Central Mountain Chain.

According to the National Weather Service, the strongest winds will impact travelers near I-40 and I-25 corridors, creating potentially hazardous driving conditions. Winds between 30–40 mph will be common in lower elevations, with significant gusts likely to bring blowing dust and reduced visibility.

The system is expected to bring cooler temperatures Monday night, with Albuquerque dipping to a low of 34°F. On Tuesday, highs will climb to 65°F in Albuquerque but will remain much cooler in northern regions, including Raton and Santa Fe.

Thanksgiving travelers should be cautious as Wednesday will continue to see strong winds and cooler weather. Highs near Albuquerque will reach 62°F, with lows plunging to 31°F. Travel through the northern mountains may be slowed by snow accumulations, especially along higher elevation routes.

The extended forecast shows sunny skies returning by Thanksgiving Day, with a high near 53°F. Friday and Saturday will remain partly sunny, with daytime highs steady in the mid-50s.

Drivers are urged to check local road conditions before traveling, especially through mountain passes. Secure loose outdoor items and avoid unnecessary travel during peak winds.
