Albany, NY – Eastern New York residents are preparing for a wintry mix of rain and snow as a low-pressure system moves into the region tonight. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for areas including Albany, Schenectady, and the Mohawk Valley, beginning early Thursday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, precipitation will start as rain late tonight before transitioning to snow during Thanksgiving morning. Up to 7 inches of snowfall is possible in higher elevations, with localized impacts expected along I-87 and I-88. Drivers are urged to plan alternate routes and allow for extra travel time as visibility may be reduced and roads could become slick.
Thanksgiving Day will bring a high near 41 degrees, with rain and snow lingering through the early afternoon. Winds are expected to pick up, creating additional travel challenges. Temperatures will drop into the low 30s Thursday night, potentially causing black ice on untreated roads.
The extended forecast shows drier conditions returning Friday, with mostly sunny skies and a high of 44. Saturday will remain cool with highs near 39, followed by another drop to the low 20s overnight. Residents should take advantage of the milder conditions this weekend to clear snow and ice ahead of another possible system early next week.
