Brownsville, TX – A winter storm warning remains in effect across much of South Texas, bringing a rare mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain to the region from midnight tonight through noon Tuesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Brownsville, up to one inch of snow and sleet is expected across Starr, Hidalgo, Kenedy, Willacy, Zapata, Brooks, and Jim Hogg counties. Ice accumulations could reach one-tenth of an inch, with wind gusts as high as 45 mph further complicating conditions.

The storm is expected to begin as rain Monday night, transitioning to freezing rain around midnight, then sleet and snow by early Tuesday morning. Hazardous road conditions, particularly on bridges and overpasses, could significantly impact the morning commute.

Residents are urged to delay travel if possible and to stay indoors. Those venturing outside should dress in layers and cover exposed skin to prevent frostbite. Motorists needing to travel should keep a flashlight, food, and water in their vehicles in case of emergencies.

The National Weather Service advises checking road conditions by calling 511. Gusty winds may also bring down tree branches, further heightening risks. The public is encouraged to monitor updates as conditions evolve.
