Midland, Texas – Drivers across West Texas should prepare for dangerous crosswinds and blowing dust as powerful southeast winds ramp up Sunday afternoon. Gusts as high as 50 mph could make travel treacherous along I-20 and area highways, especially for trucks and high-profile vehicles.
According to the National Weather Service in Midland/Odessa, a Wind Advisory is in effect from 1 p.m. Sunday through 1 a.m. Monday for much of southwest and western Texas, including Ector, Midland, Winkler, Reeves, and Terrell counties. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph are expected, with higher gusts reaching up to 50 mph.
The advisory includes the cities of Midland, Odessa, Kermit, Pecos, Fort Stockton, and Marathon. Blowing dust may reduce visibility, particularly in open areas and near construction zones. Motorists are urged to use both hands on the wheel and reduce speed when encountering strong gusts.
Residents should secure outdoor items such as patio furniture, trash bins, and garden tools. Lightweight objects could become airborne hazards under these conditions.
The strongest winds are expected during the late afternoon and evening hours. Conditions should ease by early Monday morning, but additional advisories may be issued if wind speeds remain elevated.
