Amarillo, Texas – Storms could slam Amarillo by late Sunday, bringing damaging winds and torrential rain just hours after extreme heat grips the region. Residents near Palo Duro Canyon may face dangerous conditions as the heat index climbs toward 105 degrees, triggering a Heat Advisory.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a 40% chance of strong to severe thunderstorms is expected after 7 p.m. Sunday. Primary hazards include gusty winds and heavy downpours, especially along US-287 and nearby rural roads. Anyone spending time outdoors Sunday afternoon should limit exposure, hydrate frequently, and prepare for quickly changing weather by evening.

Storm activity will remain possible through Monday night with another 30% chance of storms, mainly before 1 a.m. Tuesday. These storms could bring isolated flooding in low-lying areas, especially where soils are already saturated. The rest of the week sees lower storm chances, but hot, humid conditions will persist.
