Abilene, TX – Residents in West-Central Texas are being urged to prepare for a temporary loss of NOAA Weather Radio service next week as critical system updates are carried out.
According to the US National Weather Service in Abilene/San Angelo, the outage is scheduled from Monday through Wednesday, June 10 to June 12. During this time, several NOAA All Hazards Weather Radio transmitters across the region will be offline, including those in Abilene (WXX29), San Angelo (WXX33), Sweetwater (KWN37), Ozona (WXL44), Junction (WWG93), Richland Springs (WWG94), Coleman (WXN89), and Throckmorton (WNG722).
Though forecasts and warnings will still be issued, they will not be broadcast over the NOAA Weather Radio system. The weather service emphasized the importance of having alternative methods for receiving severe weather alerts, especially with the potential for strong storms and flash flooding in the forecast area during the maintenance window.
Officials recommend relying on local TV and radio stations, mobile weather apps, and the National Weather Service website at weather.gov/sjt to stay informed. The planned updates are necessary and were scheduled months in advance to improve long-term system reliability.
Emergency managers stress that all warnings will still be sent out through other official channels and urge residents to review their emergency communication plans ahead of the outage.
