Amarillo, TX – Strong winds and dry conditions will create critical fire weather across the Texas Panhandle today, with gusts reaching up to 55 mph.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, warm temperatures in the 70s combined with low humidity and strong south winds will increase wildfire risks, particularly in the central and western Panhandle. A wildfire risk warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m.

Wind gusts are expected to peak between 40-55 mph in areas like Dalhart, Boise City, and Dumas, with gusts over 45 mph in Amarillo, Pampa, and Borger. Residents are urged to avoid open flames, properly discard cigarettes, and keep vehicles off dry grass.

Fire officials warn that any fires that start could spread rapidly. The public should remain alert and follow local safety guidelines. Stay updated with the latest forecasts and advisories from the National Weather Service.
