According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, the warning spans from late Saturday morning through Saturday evening, with southwest winds gusting up to 40 mph and humidity dipping as low as 10%. The affected zone includes Dallam, Moore, Potter, Randall, and nearby counties, where the fire risk is elevated due to warm temperatures and extremely dry air. Motorists along US-287 and in Palo Duro Canyon should use caution—one spark could ignite fast-moving flames.
Residents are urged to avoid any outdoor burning or activities that create sparks, such as grilling or welding. Even a small ember can cause wildfire conditions to escalate quickly.
Sunday brings some relief. Winds will ease slightly, and Amarillo will see increasing clouds and a cooler high near 63°F. A warming trend returns Monday through Wednesday, with highs climbing back into the mid to upper 70s under sunny skies.
