Lubbock, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle and South Plains are on alert Friday afternoon as a tornado watch covers Lubbock, Amarillo, and 30 additional counties until 10 p.m. CDT. The National Weather Service warns of dangerous storms capable of producing tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds into the evening.
According to the Storm Prediction Center, the tornado watch—number 172—includes key population centers such as Lubbock, Potter, Randall, and Oldham counties. Thunderstorms are expected to intensify through the late afternoon, with tornadoes, hail over two inches, and wind gusts up to 70 mph possible. Major highways, including I-27 and US 84, could see rapidly changing conditions and possible closures if debris or flooding occurs.
Communities in Armstrong, Floyd, Hale, and Swisher counties are urged to review emergency plans, identify safe shelter areas, and charge mobile devices in advance of any warnings.
