Jackson, Mississippi – A wide stretch from south-central Texas to the Mississippi Delta is bracing for potential flash flooding today, as waves of heavy rain move through the region behind a slow-moving cold front.
According to the National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center, the risk of excessive rainfall is elevated through Friday evening, with a Level 2 “Slight Risk” zone covering cities including Austin, Shreveport, Jackson, and Memphis. Forecasters warn that repeated rounds of rainfall could overwhelm storm drains and creeks, especially in low-lying and urban areas.
In Texas, communities along I-35, including San Antonio and Waco, may see rainfall rates high enough to flood roadways within minutes. Eastward into Louisiana and Mississippi, vulnerable flood zones around Baton Rouge and Jackson are also at risk, particularly near smaller rivers and bayous already swollen from earlier storms this week.
Residents are urged to stay off flooded roads, charge phones in advance, and sign up for local emergency alerts. The National Weather Service emphasizes the life-saving rule: “Turn around, don’t drown.”
Rainfall will begin tapering off overnight in western zones but is expected to linger across Mississippi and western Alabama into early Saturday. Additional flood advisories could be issued depending on local rainfall totals.
