Austin, Texas – Communities from central Texas to western Louisiana should brace for dangerous storms Tuesday as the risk of strong tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds intensifies through the evening.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, areas including Austin, College Station, Killeen, and Lufkin fall within a heightened risk zone, with the greatest tornado threat highlighted by a red dashed area on the latest hazard map. Scattered severe thunderstorms are likely to develop and persist into Tuesday night, posing threats to cities as far east as Shreveport and Lafayette.

The primary concerns are strong tornadoes, hail exceeding two inches, and wind gusts capable of knocking down trees and power lines. Interstate 35 and U.S. Highway 290 could see rapid storm development and poor driving conditions. Residents in Houston and San Antonio should remain weather-aware, especially during the evening commute.

Emergency officials urge residents to monitor local alerts, charge phones, and secure outdoor items. Those in mobile homes or vulnerable structures should have a secondary shelter plan ready.

Severe thunderstorm watches and tornado warnings are expected to evolve throughout the day—stay alert for real-time updates as conditions change quickly.
