Abilene, Texas – Damaging winds, large hail, and flash flooding could impact parts of West-Central Texas starting Monday afternoon, as a line of severe thunderstorms pushes through the region.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, storms are expected to develop west of the area on Monday and intensify overnight. The greatest threats include wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and isolated tornadoes. The risk for locally heavy rainfall could lead to flash flooding, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas, through early Tuesday.

Cities under heightened threat include Abilene, San Angelo, Sweetwater, and Ballinger. Scattered thunderstorms may form into a larger storm complex overnight, increasing the danger of widespread flooding on roads and low-water crossings. Residents are urged to avoid driving through floodwaters and to have multiple ways to receive warnings.

The Storm Prediction Center has placed much of the area under a Level 2 (Slight) risk for severe storms and a Slight Risk for excessive rainfall. This system marks one of the more significant thunderstorm threats of the season so far.

Alerts remain in effect until 7 a.m. CDT Tuesday, with more advisories possible as conditions evolve.
