Amarillo, Texas – A sunny stretch of weather will wrap up Sunday across the Texas Panhandle before a new round of thunderstorms brings the threat of flooding and severe weather early next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, high temperatures will range from the mid-60s to upper 70s through Sunday, with no significant impacts expected. That changes quickly Monday, when numerous thunderstorms are expected to develop, with possible flooding across low-lying areas and poor-drainage streets. Scattered storms will continue into Tuesday, with another round of localized flooding possible.

Cities including Amarillo, Canyon, and Borger could see heavy downpours and dangerous lightning beginning Monday morning. Motorists should prepare for slick roads and limited visibility. Residents in flood-prone areas should keep phones charged and monitor local alerts in case rapid water rise occurs.

The NWS warns some of these storms may turn strong or severe, though the full extent remains uncertain. This could be the first significant rain event of May for the region, following a dry and mild weekend.

Flood watches or additional advisories could be issued by late Sunday. Stay weather-aware as the workweek begins and avoid travel during periods of heavy rain.
