Amarillo, Texas – Stormy spring weather returns to the Texas Panhandle by Sunday night, with a growing risk of flash flooding and strong thunderstorms across Amarillo and surrounding communities through Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, scattered thunderstorms may begin after 1 a.m. Monday, with heavier storms expected to follow throughout the day. A 70% chance of rain and possible thunderstorms continues into Monday and Tuesday, with rainfall totals potentially leading to flooding on roadways including I-40, US-87, and Loop 335. While severe weather is not currently forecast, large hail and gusty winds remain possible in isolated cells.

Amarillo and nearby counties—Potter, Randall, Carson, and Oldham—should prepare now by checking emergency kits, clearing drains, and avoiding flood-prone roads once the rain begins. City officials have not issued any closures yet, but residents should monitor local alerts and be ready for changing conditions.

Temperatures will remain mild, with highs in the mid-60s and lows around 50°F through the first half of next week. Dry weather is expected to return by late Wednesday, but until then, the Panhandle remains in a pattern of spring instability.
