Lubbock, Texas – Severe storms could roar through the Caprock by late Friday, bringing 90 mph wind gusts, hail as large as softballs, and the threat of isolated tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5) covers a wide portion of the South Plains and Rolling Plains, including Lubbock, Plainview, Brownfield, and Childress. The threat begins after 4 p.m. and continues into the evening hours, with the strongest storms likely between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m.
Cities such as Aspermont and Brownfield could see the worst impacts, with damaging winds and large hail likely. Flash flooding is also possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas, especially where repeated storms occur. Drivers are urged to avoid travel during peak storm hours and stay weather-aware through local alerts.
Friday highs range from 81°F in Friona to 95°F in Aspermont. While the day begins mostly sunny, skies will quickly turn volatile by late afternoon. Power outages and downed trees are possible.
Storm warnings may be updated throughout the day. Residents should charge devices and review shelter plans now, as another round of strong weather could follow into the weekend.
