Pecos, Texas – Giant hailstones and 70 mph wind gusts threaten drivers and residents across southwest Texas and far southeast New Mexico Friday evening as a severe thunderstorm watch blankets the region until 10 p.m. CDT. Communities from Pecos and Van Horn to Carlsbad and Artesia are bracing for intense weather, with the risk of hail reaching up to 3 inches in diameter and isolated tornadoes.
According to the NOAA Storm Prediction Center, thunderstorms are developing across Reeves, Culberson, Jeff Davis, Eddy, and Lea counties, with severe conditions most likely from late afternoon into the evening. Officials warn that scattered large hail, isolated damaging winds, and a tornado or two are possible, especially along I-20 near Pecos and I-10 west of Fort Stockton.
Travelers should avoid non-essential trips, park vehicles in covered areas if possible, and remain indoors during storms. Power outages and localized flooding may occur, especially in low-lying or rural areas. Carlsbad and Artesia, NM, could see the most significant hail, while Alpine and Van Horn, TX, face the highest wind threat.
This is the first severe thunderstorm watch of the season for many in the area. The threat remains until 10 p.m., with additional watches or warnings possible as storms evolve. Stay tuned to local alerts for updates.
