Amarillo, TX – A winter storm warning expired at 6 a.m. Friday, but blowing snow and gusty winds continue to create hazardous conditions across the Texas Panhandle. Drivers are urged to exercise caution on slick roads, especially on I-40 and major thoroughfares in the area. Wind gusts up to 40 mph are reducing visibility and causing drifting snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, snow accumulation reached up to 10 inches in some areas, with winds sustained at 20-30 mph. These conditions have restricted visibility and made bridges and overpasses particularly treacherous. Travelers should delay trips if possible or carry emergency supplies, including water and flashlights, in case of roadside emergencies.

The weather will improve later Friday, with skies clearing and temperatures reaching a high of 35°F. Friday night will bring a low of 18°F, with calmer winds. Saturday promises partly cloudy skies and a high near 43°F, while Sunday offers sunshine and milder conditions with highs around 40°F.

Looking ahead, temperatures will continue rising into next week, with sunny skies and highs in the low 40s by Monday. While the weekend forecast brings relief, drivers should remain vigilant on rural and less-maintained roads, where icy patches may persist.

Residents are encouraged to check road conditions via local hotlines before traveling and allow extra time for commutes.
