Amarillo, Texas – Severe thunderstorms could disrupt travel and outdoor plans across the Texas Panhandle Monday afternoon, with golf ball-sized hail and 70 mph wind gusts expected in areas like Pampa, Canadian, and Amarillo.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather outlook is in place for central and eastern portions of the Panhandle. Storms may begin forming as early as 2 p.m. in western counties such as Dalhart and Dumas, becoming more widespread between 3 p.m. and 10 p.m. across the region.

Cities including Borger, Perryton, Wheeler, and Clarendon could face damaging winds and large hail during peak hours. The NWS warns residents to remain alert and monitor updates, especially in areas east of Amarillo where storms are most likely to intensify.

Travelers should avoid unnecessary driving during peak storm hours, charge mobile devices in advance, and secure loose outdoor items. While tornado risk remains low, isolated severe cells could produce rapid changes in conditions.

The severe weather threat is expected to taper off by 10 p.m. Monday as the storm system moves east. More alerts could be issued if storm strength increases.
