Amarillo, TX – A light snow event is on the horizon for the Texas Panhandle, with potential travel disruptions Wednesday night. Residents and travelers along I-40 and surrounding areas should remain alert as precipitation transitions from rain to snow late in the evening.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, light rain may start as early as mid-Wednesday evening before transitioning to snow by midnight. Snowfall totals are expected to be minimal, with the highest accumulation—up to 1 inch—likely in the northwest Panhandle. Amarillo itself may see flurries overnight, but slick roads could develop as temperatures hover around freezing.
Winter forecasting in the Panhandle can be unpredictable, as even slight changes in temperature or moisture levels could affect precipitation amounts. Gusty winds, reaching 25 mph at times, may also reduce visibility for drivers. Hazardous travel conditions are possible, particularly along I-40 and other major routes.
Looking ahead to Thanksgiving Day, conditions will improve as sunshine returns and temperatures climb to the low 50s. Dry and mostly clear weather is expected for the holiday weekend, with highs ranging from the upper 40s to mid-50s through Saturday. Nighttime lows will drop into the 20s, so residents are encouraged to bundle up for early Black Friday shopping or outdoor holiday activities.
Travelers in the region should monitor updated forecasts and prepare for potential icy patches Wednesday night. Winter weather preparedness, including checking tire tread and packing an emergency kit, is advised for those on the road.
