Amarillo, Texas – Scattered thunderstorms could bring damaging winds and quarter-sized hail to parts of the Texas Panhandle Monday evening, with the strongest activity expected between 6 p.m. and midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, there is a 5% to 15% chance that storms will become severe across the southwest Panhandle, including areas like Vega, Hereford, and Amarillo. The primary threats are gusts up to 70 mph and hail around 1 inch in diameter. The tornado threat remains very low.

Areas west of Amarillo, including Dumas, Dalhart, and Stratford, are also under a marginal risk zone. Storms could begin as early as 5 p.m., but are most likely to develop during the evening hours. While coverage will remain scattered, those in affected areas should be prepared to seek shelter quickly if warnings are issued.

Residents should have multiple alert systems enabled and avoid outdoor activities this evening. Travel could become hazardous due to sudden wind gusts or hail.

Storm chances taper off after midnight, but more rounds of thunderstorms are possible later this week.
