Amarillo, Texas – Heavy rain and flash flooding could impact roads across the Texas Panhandle tonight as storms capable of producing up to 2 inches of rain per hour move through the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, a line of strong to severe thunderstorms will track west to east beginning after 6 p.m. Wednesday and continuing through 6 a.m. Thursday. Areas from Dalhart to Clarendon, including Amarillo, Vega, and Borger, face a 40–70% chance of receiving more than an inch of rainfall.
Localized flooding may become a serious hazard, especially in low-lying areas and poorly drained roads. Flash flooding is most likely where rainfall rates peak during evening hours. Travel could be dangerous after dark, with officials warning that water-covered roads may be difficult—or impossible—to see.
Residents in Amarillo, Pampa, and Stratford should prepare for possible power outages and rapid rises in creeks and streams. Keep mobile devices charged and avoid unnecessary travel overnight. Never attempt to drive through floodwaters.
Rain chances will diminish Thursday morning, but more scattered storms may return by the weekend.
