Amarillo, Texas – Large hail and damaging winds could hammer parts of the southeast Texas Panhandle late Monday afternoon as severe thunderstorms build across the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms could develop as early as 3 p.m., with the greatest threat window between 4 and 6 p.m. Areas at highest risk include Clarendon, Wheeler, Canadian, and Wellington, where ping pong ball-sized hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph are possible. Although the tornado threat remains low, it cannot be ruled out.
Communities along U.S. Highway 83 and Highway 287 should stay alert for rapidly changing weather conditions, especially during peak travel hours. Drivers are urged to avoid travel if storms strike, as hail and sudden wind gusts could create dangerous road conditions. Residents are also encouraged to charge electronic devices, secure loose outdoor items, and monitor local warnings throughout the evening.
Today’s storms are expected to primarily impact the southeast Panhandle, sparing cities like Amarillo and Vega from the most intense activity. However, isolated showers could still affect parts of the western Panhandle later tonight.
Severe weather warnings could be extended if storm development continues into the evening hours.
