Lubbock, Texas – Strong evening storms could batter parts of the southeastern Texas Panhandle late Thursday, with large hail and damaging winds posing risks to overnight travelers and residents. Scattered thunderstorms are expected to intensify after sunset and continue into early Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Lubbock, areas including Childress, Guthrie, and southeastern portions of the Panhandle fall under a Level 2 “Slight Risk” for severe weather through early May 2. The threat includes hail up to 1 inch and wind gusts exceeding 60 mph, especially after 9 p.m. Thursday.

While Lubbock and Plainview remain in a lower-risk zone, drivers heading east along US 82 or US 287 should prepare for rapidly changing conditions. Power outages are possible where wind damage occurs. Residents are urged to secure loose outdoor items and stay indoors if warnings are issued.

This system marks one of the region’s more active severe weather days this spring. Conditions should stabilize by mid-morning Friday, but additional watches or warnings may be issued tonight as storms evolve.
