Amarillo, Texas – Residents across the Texas Panhandle should prepare for severe thunderstorms tonight, with large hail and damaging winds expected between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m.
According to the National Weather Service in Amarillo, storms could begin as early as 7 p.m., becoming most active through late evening. The primary threats include hail up to three inches in diameter—comparable to a large apple—and wind gusts reaching 70 mph. The greatest risk zone covers cities like Amarillo, Borger, Pampa, and Clarendon.
Localized impacts may include hazardous driving conditions on I-40, scattered power outages, and potential property damage from large hailstones. Residents in areas like Vega, Dumas, and Stratford are also under a lower—but still notable—threat of strong storms overnight. Emergency managers advise staying indoors during peak storm hours and securing loose outdoor items.
While the tornado threat remains low, officials stress that all severe weather modes are possible if storms develop fully. This system’s severity will depend largely on daytime heating. Residents are encouraged to monitor local alerts and have multiple ways to receive warnings.
Severe weather risks will taper off early Monday morning, but additional advisories could be issued if conditions persist.
